Hayseed and Housdon combines two words of rural character: hayseed, the American term for an unpretentious country person, and housdon, a Scots dialect word for a small dwelling or shelter. Together they declare a Paso Robles wine estate that is proudly rural, deliberately unpretentious, and committed to the working-land values that make Central Coast wine country worth visiting.
The El Pomar District estate produces Zinfandel, Grenache, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon from calcareous estate vineyards with the practical, no-nonsense philosophy the name announces. Walk-in daily, dog-friendly, picnic on the grounds, family-welcoming — the hayseed values applied to wine hospitality.
The wines themselves reflect the same character: honest fruit from honest farming, at prices that don't pretend the wine is something fancier than it is.
