About Hundred Suns Wine
Grant Coulter and Renee Saint-Amour founded Hundred Suns in 2015 by selling their house in Portland, scraping together what they had and moving to a fixer-upper in the valley. Grant had come up as assistant winemaker at Hamacher before spending roughly a decade at Beaux Freres, first as assistant and then as winemaker under Mike Etzel. Renee was teaching high school. The name refers to the roughly hundred days of the growing season.
They later bought Breaker Vineyard, a fifty-year-old site in the Eola-Amity Hills, which is now both their home and their vineyard. Grant has since taken on the winemaking at Flaneur Wines as well, so the two operations are more closely linked than the labels suggest.
Everything here is done by the two of them: farming, winemaking, label design, distribution around town. Fruit comes off their own site and from vineyards across the valley, including Gamay from Tualatin Estate in the Tualatin Hills AVA. The house style is native fermentation, mostly neutral French oak and unfiltered bottling.
The wines to know are the Old Eight Cut Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, named for an old diamond-cutting technique that uses minimal tooling to bring out what is already in the stone, which is about as clear a statement of intent as a label can make. Tastings happen in a warehouse space in McMinnville's industrial district and are hosted by Grant or Renee personally.
