About Inspiration Vineyards & Winery
Inspiration Vineyards & Winery is a small, hands-on operation in Santa Rosa, founded in 2002 by Jon and Barbara Phillips. Jon's path to winemaking was a long one: he worked at Mirassou Winery while a student in the 1980s and taught wine education on the side, but spent years in the tech industry before finally following a two-decade passion, moving north in 2001 to buy a Russian River Valley vineyard on Olivet Road planted to Chardonnay and Zinfandel vines that date to 1896.
The winery makes around 1,500 cases a year of hand-crafted, small-production wines across a handful of varietals, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Cabernet, Syrah, Viognier and more, with a consistent aim of high-quality, balanced, food-friendly wines at fair prices. The old-vine Zinfandel and eclectically named bottlings are particular signatures, and Jon also runs a custom-crush operation for other small producers.
The tasting room sits in a Santa Rosa business park alongside other cult small wineries like Carol Shelton, and it is refreshingly unpretentious, leather couches, a dartboard and a firsthand look at the working winery, with Jon himself often pouring.
