About Kessler-Haak Vineyard and Wines
Kessler-Haak is the family project of Dan Kessler, whose home-winemaking hobby grew through a UC Davis winemaker's certificate into a 30-acre estate vineyard in the cooler northwestern Sta. Rita Hills, eleven miles west of Buellton on Highway 246, established in 2005. Morning fog and Pacific breezes ripen the fruit slowly, at lower sugars with crisp acidity and cool-climate spice.
The family lives on and works the vineyard, farming with strictly organic practices, and believes in being winegrowers first and winemakers second: minimal handling, select clones and barrels, and the goal of expressing time and place, nothing more. Estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lead, with Syrah, Riesling and well-regarded traditional-method sparkling wines rounding out the list.
Tasting happens two ways: walk-in friendly flights, glasses and a deck at the tasting room in the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Center beside the famous Lompoc Wine Ghetto, often poured by the family themselves, or appointment-only visits out at the vineyard itself for a glass among the vines.
