About Knudsen Vineyards
Knudsen Vineyards is one of the founding properties of Oregon wine. After a trip to France in the late 1960s, C. Calvert "Cal" Knudsen and his wife Julia Lee bought a 200-acre former walnut orchard in the Dundee Hills in 1971 and began planting with the whole family helping put in the first vines. By 1972 the thirty planted acres made it the largest vineyard in the Willamette Valley, and by 1975, at sixty acres, the largest in Oregon.
In 1975 Cal partnered with the pioneering winemaker Dick Erath, and the partnership was granted a permit to operate Oregon Bonded Winery No. 52 on the Knudsen site - the first commercial winery in the Dundee Hills. Knudsen Erath drew its fruit from here until 1986, and from 1987 the vineyard became a leading supplier to Argyle, a role it still holds.
The family returned to making wine under its own name in 2014, the first Knudsen-labelled release in twenty-five years, and opened its first tasting room, The Outlook, in 2020. Page Knudsen Cowles, one of Cal and Julia Lee's four children, has led the business as managing partner since the second generation took over in 2009.
The vineyard runs to about 130 planted acres of the family's landholding, mixing old-vine blocks with newer high-density plantings on Dijon clones, and is LIVE Certified Sustainable and Salmon Safe, with bluebird habitat maintained through the Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project. The wines are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with rose and sparkling alongside. Guided vineyard hikes run Friday and Saturday mornings, often led by Page herself, and the terrace looks out across the Cascades to Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson.
