About Kokomo Winery

Erik Miller gets asked about the Beach Boys a lot, but Kokomo is named for his Indiana hometown, and the coastal cypress on the label marks the Purdue graduate's move west. A Deadhead who first saw Sonoma County on a spring break trip, Miller moved out in 1999, endured a suit-and-tie financial planning job, then found his calling as a 2002 harvest intern at Belvedere Winery. He launched Kokomo in 2004 with his college roommate Josh Bartels, and the winery found its permanent home at Timber Crest Farms, surrounded by 120 acres of prime benchland vineyard on the east side of Dry Creek Valley.

The heart of Kokomo is a grower-winemaker partnership. Randy Peters, a fourth-generation Dry Creek farmer who planted his Sonoma Coast Peters Vineyard on a former Gravenstein apple ranch, became Miller's partner in 2008 after Miller's Peters Vineyard Pinot Noir won him over, and Peters now farms the fruit Miller turns into wine. The result is remarkable range: roughly a dozen or more varietals spanning Dry Creek Zinfandel, Russian River Pinot Noir and Alexander Valley Cabernet, consistently earning 90-plus ratings, Best of Class awards and gold medals, at prices that stay friendly by Healdsburg standards. Production runs about 12,000 cases plus the Breaking Bread second label, and the tasting room, built right into the working cellar and stocked with Indiana memorabilia, keeps the Hoosier hospitality genuine. Wines are serious; the atmosphere is not.
