About La Mesa Vineyards
La Mesa Vineyards is a modern, award-winning estate winery in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, producing over 20 handcrafted wines from a high-altitude vineyard planted on ancient granitic red soil. The winery was founded by Come Lague, a French-born entrepreneur who stumbled into winemaking after purchasing a former walnut farm from the d'Agostini family, one of the earliest settler families in the region. What started with a single barrel of Primitivo made from leftover seconds has grown into one of Amador County's most acclaimed producers, earning a Double Gold for their estate Syrah at the 2026 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and tying for the most Double Golds at the 2025 Foothill Wine Competition.
The estate vineyard grows nine varietals including Primitivo, Barbera, Grenache, Gamay Noir, Mourvedre, Roussanne, Syrah, Viognier, and Petite Sirah, with additional wines crafted from locally sourced Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Vermentino. All wines are made on-site using low-sulfite Flextank technology and small-batch artisan methods under the guidance of winemaker Antonia de Heinrich. The modern tasting room on Shenandoah Road features striking contemporary architecture with panoramic views of the vineyards and the Sierra Nevada foothills, an outdoor terrace, and a weekend bistro serving internationally inspired cuisine paired with estate wines. A second tasting room in historic downtown Sutter Creek at 59 Main Street brings La Mesa wines to the heart of Gold Country. The winery also produces an ultra-premium line of handcrafted olive oils from estate trees, making La Mesa one of the most complete agricultural destinations in the Sierra Foothills.
