About Lichen Estate
Lichen Estate is the second act of Douglas and Ana Lucia Stewart, the founders of acclaimed Breggo Cellars, on the 203-acre former sheep ranch they bought in 2000 halfway between Boonville and Philo. When they sold the Breggo brand in 2009 they kept the land they loved, named it for the green-gray lichen that colors the oaks each winter, and released their first wines under the new label in 2014; in 2023 Douglas even reacquired Breggo itself.
The estate is an all-organic, Pinot-only house, growing Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris planted in 2008 at meter-by-meter spacing that emulates the vine density of Champagne, a choice Stewart believes makes the vineyard unique in the Western Hemisphere. A third of the fruit becomes estate sparkling wine, the Blanc de Gris, Blanc de Noir and Grand Cuvee, while the rest goes to still Pinot Noir, White Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, including a Solera Pinot Noir blended from every vintage since 2011.
Tastings happen daily at the little yellow house among the vines, spilling onto a patio and Adirondack chairs on the front lawn with rolling-hill views. Walk-ins are welcome, picnics are encouraged, and the pours of still and sparkling side by side make this one of the clearest windows into what Anderson Valley Pinot can do.
