About Macchia Wines
Macchia Wines is a small, family-owned winery just outside Lodi in Acampo, founded in 2001 by Tim and Lani Holdener. In Italian, Macchia means the spot, and the name doubles as a philosophy: the winery sources small lots of premium fruit from California's best spots, chiefly Lodi and the Sierra Foothills, rather than owning its own vineyards.
The house specialty is Old Vine Zinfandel, and Macchia makes more than ten of them, each given a playful name like Adventurous, Voluptuous, Prestigious, or Mischievous. The lineup also runs to Italian and French varietals such as Barbera and Sangiovese, plus Petite Sirah, a late harvest, and a Port. Head winemaker Jonathan McMahan, who joined in 2002, keeps the focus squarely on the grape, and all Macchia wines are vegan and gluten-free.
The grounds are among the most inviting in Lodi, with mature shade trees, bocce and horseshoes, and plenty of spots to spread out a picnic. It is dog-friendly and relaxed, the kind of place that rewards a long, unhurried visit.
