About Madrona Vineyards
Madrona Vineyards is named for the madrone tree — the Arbutus menziesii with its spectacular red peeling bark that reveals the smooth green beneath, one of California's most visually distinctive native trees. The madrone's presence on the High Hill Ranch Road estate declares the cool-temperature environment that supports the tree's growth: madrones thrive at elevation, in well-drained soils, with some moisture but excellent air drainage. The estate's 3,500-foot elevation — among the highest commercial vineyard elevations in El Dorado County — creates conditions for Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Zinfandel of unusual cool-climate intensity. Established in 1980, Madrona is one of El Dorado County's historically founding high-elevation wine estates.
