About Masut Vineyard and Winery
Masut Vineyard and Winery is the third-generation project of brothers Jake and Ben Fetzer, grandsons of Barney Fetzer, who founded Fetzer Vineyards in 1968 and made the family name synonymous with Mendocino wine. After the Fetzer brand was sold in the early 1990s, their father Robert bought a 1,200-acre property in 1994 and named it Masut, a Native American word meaning dark, rich earth, with a vision of growing the finest Pinot Noir possible.
The first vines went in come 1997, and the site proved out: the mountainous terrain around the winery anchors the Eagle Peak, Mendocino County AVA, where elevation, thin soils and cool air produce estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of real concentration. The brothers farm organically and make the wine themselves in a converted redwood barn atop the ridge, relying more on taste than lab analysis, in a rich, opulent style of Pinot they describe simply as the way they like it.
Visits are by reservation and feel personal by design: this is a working mountain winery in the shadow of Eagle Peak with views over Mendocino's coastal range, not a hospitality complex, and tastings put you directly in conversation with a family whose name runs through half a century of Mendocino wine history.
