About Mazzocco Sonoma

Mazzocco sits on a saddle of rolling hills between the Dry Creek and Alexander valleys outside Healdsburg, next door to the storied Lytton Springs vineyard, and it has grown into the Dry Creek Valley's definitive single-vineyard Zinfandel house. Founded in the 1980s by eye surgeon Dr. Thomas Mazzocco, the winery was acquired in 2005 by Ken and Diane Wilson, Dry Creek grape growers since 1993 who wanted the Zinfandel vines surrounding the tasting room, and it became a cornerstone of their family-owned Wilson Artisan Wineries collection. The Wilsons' philosophy is radical site expression: rather than blending across vineyards, Mazzocco bottles each notable block on its own, producing at times more than twenty distinct Zinfandels in a single vintage.

Winemaker Antoine Favero, who also manages the vineyards, works fruit from an extraordinary sweep of terrain, loamy valley floor, rugged benchland and remote rocky mountain sites climbing to 2,400 feet, including celebrated Rockpile and Monte Rosso designates. Dry-farmed, head-trained blocks are handpicked, fermented on native yeasts and aged around 18 months in French oak, yielding robust, sumptuous Zinfandels that are remarkably individual, backed by hundreds of gold medals and a stack of 90-plus scores from Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the list, but Zinfandel is the reason pilgrims come. For anyone mapping the outer limits of what one grape can express across one valley, Mazzocco is the essential Dry Creek stop.
