About Monksgate Vineyard
The name is literal. Monks from a neighbouring abbey have long had the run of this land, and the family kept the arrangement going when they took the farm on, which is where MonksGate comes from.
The founders came to it from ranching roots in Colorado, wanting to get back to the land after decades away from it. They established the property in 1998, spent two years clearing, and put the first Pinot Noir vines in the ground in 2000. The farm runs to fifty acres in the east hills of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, on ancient marine sedimentary soils.
Their daughter Rebecca Moore now runs the growing as a second-generation farmer, working with winemaker Drew Voit on each vintage. The vineyard is organically farmed and the wines are estate only: Pinot Noir, a dry rose of Pinot and a dry Riesling, plus a club-exclusive Covenant Cuvee.
Visiting is deliberately low-key. You can sit by the historic barn, out in the recovered oak savannah, or next to a firepit under cover when the weather turns, with the Coast Range in the distance. It is often a one-person operation on the day, so walk-in space depends on how many bookings are already in. Fizzy the Airedale is reliably present.
Named for the monks who still walk the land, farmed by the second generation, poured beside a historic barn.
