About Mutiny Wine Room
Mutiny Wine Room is closed. It served its last day on January 31, 2026, after about six years at 1124 Usener Street in the Houston Heights. Co owner Mark Ellenberger, who ran it with his wife Emily Trout, said rising costs for ingredients, insurance and labor combined with traffic that did not sustain the operation. It should also be noted that Mutiny was a wine bar and retail room rather than a winery with vineyards of its own, so it was never a tasting room in the estate sense.
The room opened in January 2020 with a list built around small producers making roughly 500 to 5,000 cases a year, and it poured more than 30 of them by the glass at a time. The kitchen started with California cuisine and later shifted to a more family friendly menu of burgers, meatballs and steak frites when the business rebranded as Mutiny in the Heights. Tastings were the draw, with flights of boutique bottles that customers were unlikely to find elsewhere in Houston.
Nothing remains to visit at 1124 Usener Street under this name. In the final weeks the owners discounted remaining wine by up to 50 percent and held an anniversary event on January 22, 2026, before closing at the end of that month. Ellenberger and Trout said they would concentrate on their winery label, Kagan Cellars, including a wine club. Please confirm current details with the owners or with Kagan Cellars before relying on any older listing for this address.
