About Ovum Wines
Ovum Wines is an Oregon white-wine label founded in 2011 by the husband-and-wife team of John House and Ksenija Kostic House. After working together at Chehalem in the Willamette Valley, the couple set out to explore Oregon through the lens of Riesling, sourcing fruit from vineyards across the state - from the Columbia Gorge and Willamette Valley to Elkton and the Rogue Valley - chosen for their winds, diurnal swings and well-draining soils.
The winemaking is deliberately hands-off and consistent across the range: native fermentations, no additions or subtractions beyond a little sulfur, and extended lees contact of eight to nine months in neutral acacia and oak barrels, Nomblot concrete eggs and Austrian cask. Ovum is devoted mainly to white varieties - Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Muscat - in bottlings such as Big Salt, Off the Grid and Memorista, with the occasional small-lot red. The wines are textured and mineral-driven, framed by bright acidity.
Ovum is a small, allocation-driven producer rather than a walk-in destination, so there is no public tasting room in the usual sense. The wines are distributed through fine retailers and restaurants and offered to the mailing list; visits, when possible, are best arranged directly with the winery.
