About Petroni Vineyards
Petroni Vineyards is a boutique estate winery perched up a winding road in the Moon Mountain District, high above Sonoma Valley. Its founder, Lorenzo Petroni, left his native Lucca for San Francisco at seventeen and, after building a life in the restaurant world, chased a singular dream: to be the first California vintner to grow the prized Sangiovese Grosso clone and craft a Brunello-style wine outside Italy.
He personally imported rootstock from Tuscany, and Petroni became the first winery in California to make a Brunello-style Sangiovese, even winning permission from Italy's Brunello consortium to use the name. The terraced, organically farmed estate also grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and whites, plus estate olive oil milled on-site, and features 19,000 square feet of Tuscan-style wine caves.
Visits are an event: guided estate and cave tours with generous tastings, including verticals back to 1998 and optional chef-prepared pairings, by appointment, in a warm Italian-family atmosphere.
