About Pillar Bluff Vineyards
Pillar Bluff Vineyards is one of the oldest wineries in Texas, having earned its federal bonding license in 1999 and opened its tasting room in 2002, in the rolling Hill Country near Lampasas. It is a small, hands-on, family-run operation, the kind of place where the winemaker himself, Gill, is likely to pour your glass and talk you through the vintages.
The estate sits on the alluvial soils of Pillar Bluff Creek, a well-drained sandy loam over fractured dolomite limestone whose depth gives the vines exceptional drought tolerance, while the bottomland location sheds the day's heat quickly at night. Five acres are planted to eight French varieties: estate Bordeaux-style reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, alongside whites of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier, with production historically around 1,200 to 1,400 cases.
The tasting room is delightfully small and warm, with Tuscan-yellow walls and a wood tasting counter, opening onto a gazebo and pavilion among the vines that host regular music, a Celtic solstice celebration, and weddings.
