About Plēb Urban Winery - Grove Arcade
plēb urban winery is an Asheville producer built around the idea that Western North Carolina can grow serious wine. The winery sources fruit from six farms in Henderson and Watauga Counties and makes small batches with minimal intervention, and in 2018 alone it brought in 28 tons of local grapes for more than twenty separate bottlings. The team includes Lauren Turpin as executive manager, Lee Turpin running front of house, head winemaker Chris Denesha and assistant winemaker Tyler Kay. The name and the house philosophy come from Roman plebeian culture and the Aventine Triad of agriculture, viticulture and fertility.
The downtown room this page points to is The Aventine, plēb's tasting bar at 25 Page Avenue, Suite 102, directly across from the Grove Arcade. It was opened to pour plēb's own wines next to other producers who work organically, biodynamically or with minimal intervention, so a visit is as much a survey of that style of winemaking as it is a look at one label. The space also houses the wine exhibit of the North Carolina Craft Beverage Museum, which gives the room a second reason to linger. The winemaking approach the team describes is to do as little as possible to the wine in order to establish a baseline for what Western North Carolina varietals actually taste like.
The Aventine lists hours of Wednesday and Thursday 2pm to 8pm, Friday and Saturday noon to 8pm, and Sunday noon to 6pm, closed Monday and Tuesday, with a phone number of 828-575-2180. plēb also lists a production winery at 289 Lyman Street in the River Arts District, though some listings show that River Arts District address as closed, so do not assume both rooms are pouring on the same day. Downtown parking around Page Avenue is metered garage parking rather than a winery lot. Confirm current hours, addresses and tasting options with the winery before you go.
