About Powicana Farm

Powicana Farm is the small family farm of Remi and Zoubida Zajac, a French couple who fell in love with Mendocino and found their piece of it on the edge of a plateau above Lake Mendocino, where a Redvine sandy clay loam glows signature red. They named the place Powicana, the Pomo word for Red Clay Ridge, in honor of the people who lived on the land before them.

The vineyard is a single variety, Petite Sirah, Mendocino's historic black grape, planted in 2002 and farmed with rare conviction: biodynamic since 2013, CCOF certified organic since 2015, converted to no-till and on a path to full dry farming, drawing inspiration from Masanobu Fukuoka's natural agriculture. The wines follow the French tradition of expressing varietal and terroir with minimal intervention, each vintage revealing its own personality.

Visits are by appointment and feel like calling on a farmstead rather than a winery, because that is what it is: a family farm with vegetables, fruit and friendly animals alongside the vines, where the Zajacs themselves pour the wines and walk the rows. For travelers seeking the natural-wine end of Mendocino at its most personal, this ridge is the real thing.
