About Quixote Winery
Quixote Winery was founded in 1996 by Carl Doumani, who had earlier purchased and restored the historic Stags' Leap Winery in 1971; Quixote's first vintage was released in 1999 from a 27-acre estate in the Stags Leap District. Doumani commissioned Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser to design the winery building after discovering his work, it remains the only United States project built by Hundertwasser, took roughly a decade to complete, and features a gold-leafed onion dome, a living roof, and deliberately no right angles above the basement.
The estate is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, with smaller amounts of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, grown on volcanic, cobblestone-flecked soils that concentrate flavor by retaining less water. Hundertwasser himself pushed Doumani toward organic farming, and the property continues to be farmed without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. In 2014, Wine Spectator reported that Quixote was sold to a Chinese-owned investment firm for approximately $29 million; the winery remains an active member of the Stags Leap District Winegrowers and continues to produce wine today.
