Lake Waramaug, above which Hopkins Vineyard sits, was carved by glaciers retreating from New England approximately 12,000 years ago — the same glacial activity that created the well-drained loam soils Connecticut winemakers rely on today.

About Litchfield Hills

The Litchfield Hills are Connecticut wine country at its most scenic and storied. The rolling terrain of northwestern Connecticut — glacially carved hills, spring-fed ponds, and Colonial-era farmsteads — provides both the landscape beauty and the well-drained, loam-over-glacial-till soils that quality winegrowing requires. This is the region that draws New Yorkers two hours up I-84 on autumn weekends, the wine country that defines Connecticut's viticultural identity to the world outside the state.

Hopkins Vineyard, perched above Lake Waramaug near Warren, is among New England's most photographed wineries — a red barn on a hillside overlooking one of Connecticut's most beautiful lakes. The estate has been producing wine since 1979 and represents the mature, assured style that the best Litchfield Hills wineries have developed over decades of experience with the region's character varieties.

Cabernet Franc is the Litchfield Hills' signature red grape — the variety's tolerance for cool growing conditions and its expression of dark fruit, green herb, and iron-mineral character suits the New England terroir perfectly. Sunset Meadow Vineyards in Goshen, Jerram Winery in New Hartford, and Land of Nod in North Canaan round out a region that rewards leisurely exploration over a full weekend.
