About Southeastern Massachusetts

Southeastern Massachusetts is home to America's easternmost wine appellation and one of New England's most serious wine operations. Westport Rivers Vineyard dominates the scene with 80 acres of estate-grown Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling, producing methode champenoise sparkling wines that have earned national recognition and a devoted following.

The South Coast AVA benefits from the Gulf Stream's moderating influence, the ocean current passes within 100 miles, extending the growing season and tempering winter extremes that would otherwise make viticulture impossible at this latitude. The glacial soils provide the drainage and mineral content that support serious winemaking.

Beyond Westport Rivers, the region includes Running Brook Vineyards in Dartmouth, Travessia Urban Winery in New Bedford, and a growing number of small producers working with both Vinifera and hybrid grapes. The area's proximity to Providence and Boston makes it an accessible day trip, and the coastal scenery, fishing villages, harbors, cranberry bogs, adds to the appeal.
