About Southwest Michigan Wine
Southwest Michigan's wine country stretches along the Lake Michigan shore from St. Joseph and Benton Harbor north through Paw Paw and Kalamazoo. The lake's thermal mass moderates both summer and winter temperatures, creating a growing season 2-3 weeks longer than inland areas. This warmth allows fuller-bodied reds, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, plus the state's most consistent sparkling wine production. Tabor Hill Winery, established in 1970, was the region's pioneer and remains one of Michigan's most visited wineries. Round Barn Winery, Domaine Berrien Cellars, and Hickory Creek Winery produce increasingly ambitious estate wines. The region's proximity to Chicago (just 2 to 2.5 hours) makes it a popular weekend destination for Midwestern wine tourists.
