About Rexford Winery

Rexford is a father and son operation. Joe Miller is an astronomy and astrophysics professor emeritus at UC Santa Cruz who, back in the 1970s, taught both astrophysics and wine appreciation there and has been known to observe that students could earn the same credit for either. He and his son Sam founded the winery in 2008.

The wines are small-lot and single-vineyard: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and other premium varieties bought from selected local sites, made to show the particular microclimate and soil each came from rather than a house style laid over the top.

The Westside room is the working one. It sits in an unassuming cinderblock building on Ingalls Street, which is exactly the gritty, mid-transformation feel that the industrial end of Santa Cruz wine does well, and the Millers are often behind the bar themselves.

It is part of the Surf City Vintners cluster, the collective that turned this stretch of warehouses into a walkable tasting district. Sones Cellars, Madson Wines, MJA Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard and Stockwell Cellars are all within a block or two.

Meet the winemakersJoe and Sam Miller are often pouring, and reviewers consistently note they treat newcomers and members alike.
Single-vineyard focusSmall lots kept separate by site, so a flight is a comparison rather than a range.
The working-cellar feelA plain industrial building where the wine is actually made, not a designed hospitality space.
Walkable to eight more roomsPart of the Surf City Vintners district on Ingalls and Fair, with the rest of the westside tasting rooms within a couple of blocks.
A second room in CapitolaThe same wines are poured in a calmer setting on Capitola Avenue if the industrial estate is not the mood.
"The westside at its most honest: a cinderblock cellar, single vineyards, and the winemaker pouring."
