About Roche Winery
Roche Winery is one of the original founding estates of the Carneros AVA, established by Joe and Genevieve Roche in 1982 at 28700 Arnold Drive in Sonoma, at a time when Carneros was barely recognized as a distinct wine region. The Roches were among the pioneers who recognized that the cool, foggy conditions along the northern shore of San Pablo Bay were ideally suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and their early commitment helped put Carneros on the California wine map.
The estate sits at the southern end of Sonoma Valley where the Carneros appellation begins, giving Roche access to the maritime influence that defines the AVA. Estate Pinot Noir is the heart of the program, cool-climate, restrained, and genuinely expressive of the Carneros character that has attracted so many serious producers to the appellation over the past four decades. The Chardonnay program follows a similar philosophy: barrel-fermented, thoughtfully oaked, and built for balance rather than power.
The tasting room is open daily from 11am to 5pm with walk-ins welcome, and the $25 fee is well below what comparable Carneros estates typically charge. The Arnold Drive location makes Roche an easy and rewarding stop for visitors arriving from San Francisco or the East Bay, the winery sits just minutes from downtown Sonoma while offering the cooler, quieter character of southern Carneros rather than the bustle of the Sonoma Plaza.
"Roche is Carneros history in a bottle, one of the estates that proved the appellation could produce world-class Pinot Noir before the rest of California caught on."
With over four decades of Carneros farming behind them, the Roche family has accumulated the kind of vineyard knowledge that only time can provide. The wines reflect this experience, consistent, honest, and rooted in a sense of place that newer Carneros producers are still working to achieve. For visitors to Sonoma, Roche is a worthwhile detour from the plaza crowds and a reminder of what California wine country looked like before it became a destination.
