About Rosenthal - The Malibu Estate

Rosenthal is where Malibu wine began. George Rosenthal planted the estate in 1987, making it the first vineyard in Malibu, and the site proved so distinctive it earned its own appellation: the Malibu-Newton Canyon AVA, whose grapes go into no other producer's wines in the world. The vines sit around 1,400 feet up a secluded canyon of the Santa Monica Mountains, four miles from the ocean in a microclimate built for slow, even ripening.

The estate's story took a hard turn and a graceful recovery: the brand's longtime wine bar down on the Pacific Coast Highway closed in the wake of the January 2025 Palisades fire, and in August 2025 the estate itself reopened to visitors as The Vineyard Experience, a reservation-only weekend tasting at the Kanan Dume and Newton Canyon Road property. Guests settle into vineyard seating under oak trees with a guided flight of five Rosenthal and Surfrider wines, live music and sweeping canyon views.

Bring a picnic (no outside alcohol), book a Saturday or Sunday slot between 11 and 5, and taste the only wines on earth grown entirely in the Malibu-Newton Canyon AVA at their source.

The vineyard that started Malibu wine in 1987, now pouring its one-of-a-kind AVA under the estate oaks by weekend reservation.
