About Saxon Brown
Saxon Brown is a small Sonoma Valley winery devoted to single-vineyard wines, the personal label of owner-winemaker Jeff Gaffner. He named it for the willful, resilient heroine of Jack London's Valley of the Moon novel, fitting for a third-generation farmer who launched the label in 1997.
Gaffner learned his craft at Chateau St. Jean under legendary vintner Richard Arrowood, part of the team behind the celebrated 1996 Cinq Cepages named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year, and went on to become one of the most sought-after consulting winemakers for artisan Napa and Sonoma labels. Those decades of grower relationships let him cherry-pick fruit from coveted sites, Durell, Gap's Crown, Roberts Road, Green Acres, Hyde and more, for restrained, elegant, site-expressive bottlings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Syrah and Semillon.
Production stays under 3,000 cases, and the wines are widely acclaimed for letting each vineyard's voice come through. Tastings are intimate and by appointment, a personal look at winemaking as storytelling.
