About Scherrer Winery
Scherrer Winery is a small, family-run operation just north of Sebastopol, where owner-winemaker Fred Scherrer has quietly built one of Sonoma County's most respected boutique labels. Fred made his first wine under his own name in 1991, and his roots run deeper still: he first became known for Zinfandel from his father's Alexander Valley vineyard, a family site now well over a century old, while working as winemaker at the esteemed Dehlinger.
His approach is meticulous and hands-off in the cellar: the wines are bottled without fining or filtration and given long, patient aging, sometimes two or three winters in old oak, the philosophy being that great wine is largely made in the vineyard. Best known for Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast, Fred also crafts old-vine Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Syrah, Grenache and rose, full-flavored, site-specific and famously ageworthy, at around 4,000 to 5,000 cases a year.
Tastings are intimate and by appointment, led by Fred himself, with three annual open houses for those who can't book a private visit.
