About Shallon Winery

Shallon Winery is a one-of-a-kind winery in downtown Astoria producing wines and meads from wild and cultivated fruits of the Pacific Northwest coast. Founded by Paul van der Veldt in 1977, Shallon is one of the most unconventional wineries in Oregon, crafting Whey Wine from cheddar cheese whey, Chocolate Orange wine, wild Salal berry wine, and cranberry mead alongside more traditional fruit wines. The operation is small, eccentric, and deeply personal.

The tasting room on Duane Street in historic downtown Astoria offers a visit unlike any other winery experience in the state. Paul himself often hosts tastings with passionate, freewheeling commentary on his unusual winemaking philosophy. Shallon is a true original and a must-visit for adventurous wine lovers exploring the Oregon Coast.
