About Somerset Vineyard & Winery
Somerset Vineyard and Winery holds a unique distinction in Southern California wine country: it is the first and only winery in the region to practice the ancient art of terracotta winemaking. Using hand-crafted Qvevri and Amphorae clay vessels imported from Impruneta, Italy, the winery connects visitors to an 8,000-year-old tradition that traces back through Georgia, Greece, Italy, and the Middle East. The 13-acre vineyard sits at the mouth of the famed De Portola Wine Trail and specializes in sustainably farmed varietals from the Rhone Valley and the Spanish Mediterranean, including Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, Syrah, Macabeo, Monastrell, and Tempranillo.
The winery was born when brothers Kurt and John Tiedt, along with a group of close friends, turned a shared love of good times into a working vineyard. Somerset was the street where they grew up in the suburbs of Orange County, and the name carries the spirit of block parties, neighborhood potlucks, and lifelong camaraderie. Award-winning winemaker David Raffaele established the Rhone and Spanish programs in 2009 on what was formerly the Keyways property, and the vines have reached full maturity, producing outstanding fruit and wine. The grounds feature an elegant tasting room, beautiful gardens with over 500 white rose bushes and 50 olive trees, an iconic estate house, and The Stables event area. Live music fills the property on weekends, dogs are welcome on leash, and behind-the-scenes Amphorae tours are among the most popular experiences in all of Temecula.
