About Sonoma Coast Vineyards
Sonoma Coast Vineyards operates from the far western edge of Sonoma County, producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some of the coldest and most challenging growing sites in California. The extreme Sonoma Coast AVA, distinct from the broader Sonoma Coast designation, encompasses the coastal ridges and valleys closest to the Pacific Ocean, where temperatures rarely exceed the mid-60s during summer and fog is a near-daily presence through the growing season.
Pinot Noir is the focussourced from vineyard sites that push California viticulture toward its climatic limits. The results are wines with naturally low alcohol, piercing acidity, and a savory, almost Burgundian character that sets them apart from warmer inland California Pinot. The Chardonnay program draws from the same coastal sources, producing a lean and mineral style that rewards those who prefer tension over richness in their white Burgundy equivalents.
The winery's commitment to the extreme coast reflects a belief that Sonoma's most distinctive and age-worthy Pinot Noir comes not from the well-known Russian River Valley floor but from the windswept, ocean-facing hillsides that few producers have had the patience or resources to farm seriously. Production is small, quality is high, and the wines reward cellaring.
"The extreme Sonoma Coast is to California Pinot what the Côte de Nuits is to Burgundy, demanding, unforgiving, and capable of producing wines of extraordinary finesse."
For wine enthusiasts seeking the cutting edge of California cool-climate viticulture, Sonoma Coast Vineyards represents the pursuit of that ideal in its most uncompromising form. Allocations are limited and the mailing list is the primary channel for acquiring the wines.
