About Sonoma Portworks

Sonoma Portworks is a distinctive small winery in Petaluma with a singular focus: it's the county's specialist in port and after-dinner wines. Founded in 1994 by Bill and Caryn Reading, originally near the town of Sonoma before relocating to Petaluma, it has spent three decades coaxing California grapes into elegant, balanced fortified wines, becoming the only winery in Sonoma County devoted to the style (in 2025 the founders passed the torch to Clarksburg's Heringer Estates, who continue the tradition).

Drink dessert is the house motto, and the handcrafted portfolio delivers: tawny and vintage ports from Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, the signature Deco Port infused with dark chocolate, a Rose Port, a Chardonnay-based White Port, sherry, grappa, and even a balsamic-style Sonomic vinegar.

The cozy tasting room, tucked into the historic Foundry Wharf along the Petaluma River, is a genuine hidden gem, relaxed and welcoming, with cheese pairings, an outdoor patio and knowledgeable hosts happy to explain how port is made. Walk-ins welcome.

Sonoma County's only dedicated port house, pouring handcrafted fortified wines and its signature chocolate Deco Port in a cozy Petaluma room.
