About Soquel Vineyards
Soquel Vineyards is three miles up narrow Glen Haven Road from the town of Soquel, on the crest of a hill ringed by redwoods with the whole sweep of Monterey Bay below it. The drive is the first part of the visit.
Twin brothers Peter and Paul Bargetto founded it in 1987 with their friend Jon Morgan, after leaving the family business. That family business is Bargetto Winery, started in 1933 by their grandfather John Bargetto and his brother Philip, a few minutes down the hill. In a neat turn, the brothers later bought land their grandfather had once owned and put the new winery on it.
The building carries the lineage deliberately. Its roof is laid with handmade Italian tiles dating to the mid-1700s, and the winery doors were cut from a 12,000 gallon redwood tank salvaged out of the original Bargetto winery. Inside there is an inlaid wood tasting counter and a wall of barrels; glass doors open onto a patio with a telescope trained on the bay.
A small estate vineyard supplies Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, with the rest of the fruit bought in from sites around Santa Cruz and further north. The range runs Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo and old-vine Zinfandel, and barrel samples are often open on weekends.
