About Spear Vineyards & Winery
Spear Vineyards and Winery is one of the Sta. Rita Hills' true estate domaines, the family project of Ofer Shepher, who began winemaking studies at UC Davis in 2004, moved to the historic Gnesa Ranch the next year, and devoted himself to this single appellation ever since. The property occupies a rare position straddling the AVA's two corridors, with the white-rock soils of the Santa Rosa Road side and sweet water from the Drum Canyon aquifer.
The 35-acre vineyard climbs from the Highway 246 flats into strikingly steep upper blocks reaching 1,100 feet, farmed sustainably and herbicide-free, and planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah with smaller lots of Grenache and Gruner Veltliner. The estate wines aim, in the family's words, to communicate the vineyard's voice with lucidity and sincerity.
Tastings are private, appointment-only affairs Thursday through Monday in a stunning tasting room raised on the footprint and roofline of the property's original 1920s dairy barn, with panoramic views across the surrounding Sta. Rita Hills, plus a vineyard-side patio and seasonal estate tours. Note that visits are for guests 21 and over.
