About Stephen Goff Wines

Steve Goff quit a job at a Bay Area book publisher, took a harvest position with a Carneros Pinot Noir producer and never went back. A postgraduate degree in enology and viticulture at Fresno State followed, and on finishing in spring 2001 he moved to Oregon to become assistant winemaker at Beaux Freres.

Six years there, in both cellar and vineyard, led to his current day job as winemaker and vineyard manager at Colene Clemens Vineyards. This label is the other thing: his own project, built to explore Pinot Noir from sites and soils beyond one estate.

The parcels are tiny and specific. The Shea Vineyard bottling comes from a 1.57-acre section of block 25 on the far western edge of Shea's west hill, an early-ripening block planted to Wadenswil, in the Yamhill-Carlton District. The Weber Vineyard wine comes from the top acre of block 8 on Weber's east-facing slope in the Dundee Hills, twenty-eight-year-old own-rooted Pommard in deep volcanic Jory soil. Both are named for their vineyard managers as readily as their owners in his own notes.

Alongside those sit a Cuvee Marguerite Pinot Noir and a Cherry Grove Gamay Noir. A tasting room in Dundee opened recently; before that the label had no visitable address of its own.

One and a half acres of Shea, one acre of Weber, made by someone who has farmed both.

Beaux Freres trained, six years as assistant winemaker there before taking over the vineyard and cellar at Colene Clemens.
Genuinely single-block,a 1.57-acre section of Shea block 25 and the top acre of Weber block 8, not whole-vineyard blends.
Own-rooted old Pommard, the Weber fruit comes from twenty-eight-year-old own-rooted vines in Jory soil.
Gamay too,a Cherry Grove Gamay Noir alongside the Pinot Noir bottlings.
Somewhere to taste it now,a Dundee tasting room, where for years the label had no address of its own.
"Some of the most precisely sourced Pinot in the valley, from a winemaker with a day job at another estate."
