About Stony Knoll Vineyards

Stony Knoll Vineyards sits on land the Coe family has farmed since 1896, in southern Surry County a few minutes from the historic Rockford village and the Yadkin River. The 48-acre property carries a North Carolina Century Farm designation from the state Department of Agriculture, and its history reads like the region's: cleared for cultivation with hand tools and draft animals in the 1940s, planted in tobacco until the early 1980s, then turned over to cattle and hay.

In the late 1990s Van Coe set out to put the farm into a new kind of cultivation, and the family planted vines with an eye toward keeping the land in production for another generation. The first harvest came in 2002 and the winery followed shortly after, making Stony Knoll one of the earlier arrivals in the modern Yadkin Valley.

The plantings are unusually broad for a small NC estate, spanning Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier, Chambourcin, Niagara and cold-hardy hybrids such as Arandell and Corot Noir, plus house blends and dessert bottlings. Tastings are poured in a two-level French-style chateau with cathedral ceilings and oak finishes, with winemaking below and patio seating overlooking the vines. The estate is pet-friendly and a Harvest Host site, allows picnics, and rents out an 1860 homestead as a wine lodge for overnight stays and weddings.

A Surry County Century Farm since 1896, tobacco until the 1980s, vines ever since.
