About Sunstone Winery
Sunstone Winery is an organic vineyard, winery, and villa retreat in the Santa Ynez Valley, about 35 minutes north of Santa Barbara. Named for the sun-dappled shale and stones of its estate, Sunstone transports visitors to the Provençal French countryside, with lavender- and rosemary-filled courtyards, an expansive lawn, and shaded picnic grounds. Sunstone's tasting room is perched on terraces overlooking the Santa Ynez River and the rolling Santa Ynez Mountain range, with hillside barrel caves and a picturesque Provencal-style setting.
Founders Fred and Linda Rice built the estate's Old World character over years of sourcing reclaimed materials from quarries and villages across France. The centerpiece Sunstone Villa, completed in 2004, was constructed from limestone and timbers salvaged from historic French chateaus and a 19th-century lavender factory, and the winery ages its wines in cool stone barrel caves cut into the hillside.
Farmed organically, Sunstone produces small-lot Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines that are not sold in stores. It is among the most visited tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County, open daily, with seated flights, private tastings, and gourmet boxed lunches available on the grounds.
