Tench Vineyards, Oakville Winery & Tasting Room

John and Joan Tench, who had immigrated from Wales and Great Britain, bought this 61-acre Oakville property in 1965, the same year John retired as manager of Shell Oil's Deer Park refinery in Houston. For years the family simply sold its grapes to other wineries, including one memorable harvest in 1977 when a local high school jazz band picked the fruit themselves and sold it to Joseph Phelps Winery, which bottled it as the Jazz Band Cabernet Sauvignon to help fund the band's expenses.

The Tenches' son Brian and his wife Adair, whose family traces to an 1846 wagon party that crossed paths with the ill-fated Donner Party, eventually took over the property. Winemaker Russell Bevan of Bevan Cellars, who discovered the vineyard after its previous grower lost access to a neighboring site sold to Peter Michael Wines in 2009, has crafted Tench's acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon ever since, from a site neighboring Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle.
