Terra Valentine Winery

Fred Aves, a Swiss-born engineer who invented remote-controlled car mirrors and airplane instrument parts, built a stone castle-like winery on Spring Mountain almost entirely by hand in the early 1970s, naming the property Yverdon after his mother's Swiss hometown. Aves closed the winery in 1986, and it sat abandoned until Angus and Margaret Wurtele, who had separately bought a nearby parcel they called Wurtele Vineyard in 1996, purchased the derelict Yverdon property in 1999 and founded Terra Valentine.

Winemaker Sam Baxter, hired in 1999, replanted the vineyard and opened Terra Valentine to the public in 2002. The Wurteles sold the historic Yverdon winery and vineyard to Jackson Family Wines in 2013, which turned it into the home of Lokoya, while keeping the Wurtele Vineyard and selling the Terra Valentine brand itself to Baxter in 2014, who relocated production to St. Helena and later bought his own Spring Mountain vineyard.
