About Testa Vineyards
Testa Vineyards has been farmed by the same Italian family since 1912, when Gaetano Testa left Gallarate, Italy, chose Calpella because it reminded him of home, and cleared the land with Belgian horses and dynamite alongside his wife Maria and son Victor. Today the fourth and fifth generations run the ranch with the sixth learning alongside them, making it one of Mendocino's deepest continuous family wine stories.
The home ranch grows the old Mendocino heritage varieties, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Barbera, Grenache and the rare Charbono, with hillside Cabernet from the nearby Gusto vineyard, all going into the family's signature Black and White wines along with Cabernet, Petite Sirah and Coro Mendocino bottlings. The property itself is the attraction: a historic cellar, century-old ranch house and weathered barns beside a pond, with walnut-shaded picnic grass and waterfront views.
Visits to the home ranch are private tastings and events by reservation, often hosted by a family member with a story for every building. The family also runs the Testa Coffee and Wine Shop up the road in Redwood Valley, open daily with walk-up wine tastings, coffee and food, plus an antiques shop next door, and the ranch house itself, dog friendly and sleeping six, can be rented for a stay among the vines.
