About Thomas T Thomas Vineyards
Thomas T Thomas Vineyards is the second act of a remarkable life: its founder grew up a self-taught guitarist in small-town Ohio, trained as an opera singer, served as chief financial officer at biotech companies and paints seriously, before a 1999 trip to Burgundy changed everything. In 2001 he bought the first Anderson Valley property he was shown, 36 hillside acres a mile northwest of Philo that, he says, told him to buy them.
He built a winery and planted a three-acre estate Pinot Noir vineyard in 2008, perched between 270 and 400 feet above the valley floor with southeast, west and northwest exposures that trade fog-cooled mornings for warm afternoons and Pacific evening winds. After years of selling the fruit to other wineries, he bottled his first wines in 2017 and by 2018 was keeping every grape for his own label: up to four Pinot Noir bottlings, including Reserve and Buster's Hill, plus an Anderson Valley Chardonnay.
The visit is the signature: an intimate, appointment-only, roughly 90-minute one-on-one tasting with the owner and winemaker himself, in an art-filled tasting room beside the estate vines, where the paintings on the walls are his too. Few stops in the valley offer this much unhurried time with the person who made everything in the glass.
