About Oakville Wine Country
Oakville is Napa Valley's most prestigious AVA, a 2-mile-wide strip of the valley floor where gravelly bench soils laid down by the ancient Napa River produce some of the most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente, Silver Oak, Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and Plumpjack all source from these vineyards.
The combination of east-west valley orientation, well-drained alluvial soils, and a microclimate that balances morning fog with warm afternoon sun creates ideal growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The To Kalon vineyard, first planted by H.W. Crabb in 1868, is the most historic and most coveted vineyard in the region, supplying fruit to multiple iconic producers.
A visit to Oakville is a wine pilgrimage. The To Kalon Cellar at Robert Mondavi, the architecture of Opus One, the caves at Far Niente, and the tasting experience at Silver Oak together represent the pinnacle of Napa Valley wine tourism. 90 minutes north of San Francisco via I-80 East to Highway 29 North through downtown Napa. Oakville sits between Yountville and Rutherford on Highway 29.
When to Visit
Year-round, but harvest season (mid-August through October) is the most exciting time. Spring (April-May) is gorgeous before the summer crowds arrive.
