About Tres Colline Vineyards
Frank Busch, John Griggs and Cross Moceri became friends in 2012 over a shared interest in wine and an idea about building an estate together. They were not from Oregon and chose the Willamette Valley deliberately, on the reasoning that the soil and climate were right for Pinot Noir but the hospitality had room to improve. Tres Colline launched in 2021.
Grant Coulter makes the wine, which matters. He came up through Hamacher at the Carlton Winemakers Studio, spent years at Beaux Freres, latterly as winemaker until 2016, founded Hundred Suns with his wife Renee, and has been winemaker and director of vineyards at Flaneur. Few people have a broader read on this stretch of the valley.
The range is estate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and rose of Pinot Noir, with additional bottlings drawn from partner vineyards elsewhere in the Willamette Valley. The wine club runs in tiers named for the vineyard: Trellis and Terroir.
The estate is fifteen minutes up into the northwest hills from downtown McMinnville, in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Alongside the vines there are several acres of oak savanna with a pond and a nature trail, plus a rustic barn. Visits are by appointment, and the stated aim is five-star service without the stiffness, which in practice means Sarah DeRosa, the estate director, bakes the seed crackers for every tasting.
