About Ulysses Vineyard
This Oakville property traces to 1873, when pioneer Charles Hopper first planted vines on land purchased from Napa Valley founder George Yount, later known as the Missouri Hopper Ranch. Christian Moueix, whose family owns Bordeaux legends Château Trotanoy and La Fleur Pétrus and who first worked a Napa harvest at Beaulieu Vineyards in 1968 before founding Dominus Estate in 1982, bought the 31.5-acre site, then known as Schmidt Ranch, in 2008, making it only his second Napa Valley project in three decades.
The vineyard sits on the same alluvial fan as Dominus's Napanook vineyard, bordered by To Kalon, Vine Hill Ranch, and Martha's Vineyard, though a warmer microclimate gives Ulysses its own distinct character, gentler and more refined than its sister estate. Winemaker Tod Mostero, who trained at Château Haut-Brion and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti before joining Dominus in 2007, farms the property dry, using double Guyot trellising and low-intervention winemaking that earned CCOF organic certification in 2021.
