About Turnbull Wine Cellars

William Turnbull, a noted Bay Area architect known for his work on the famed Sea Ranch coastal development, and attorney Reverdy Johnson founded the winery in 1979 as Johnson Turnbull Vineyards on Oakville land the pair had planted to vines. Turnbull designed the winery building himself, along with several other Napa Valley properties including part of Cakebread Cellars, aiming for something low-key and in tune with the landscape.

Newspaper publisher Patrick O'Dell bought the estate in 1993, renamed it Turnbull Wine Cellars, and expanded its holdings with the Fortuna Vineyard in Oakville and the Amoenus Vineyard in Calistoga. Winemaker Peter Heitz, a fourth-generation vintner who trained at Beringer under Ed Sbragia, now oversees a program built around small-lot, single-vineyard fermentations, sometimes as many as 90 in a single vintage.
