How Many Wineries Are in Each U.S. State?

Our catalog tracks 6,054 wineries across all 50 states. The full state-by-state ranking, updated for 2026.

American wine is no longer just a West Coast story. Wino Notion tracks 6,054 wineries across all 50 U.S. states, and while California still dominates, the map of where Americans make and pour wine now reaches into every corner of the country. This page ranks all 50 states by the number of wineries in our catalog, with each state’s share of the national total.

A note up front on what this is: these are the wineries in our catalog, a broad, current, independently maintained cross-section of U.S. tasting rooms and producers, not an official government census. It is the best guide to where you can actually go taste wine, which is what we care about. Our verification page explains how we vet listings, and there is no pay-to-play.

How we counted

We totaled every winery in the Wino Notion catalog by its home region, then rolled those regions up to states: Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, the Sta. Rita Hills and the rest all count toward California; the Finger Lakes, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley toward New York; Walla Walla, Yakima, and the Columbia Valley toward Washington; the Willamette Valley toward Oregon, and so on. The bi-state Columbia Gorge AVA is counted under Washington, and a single Canadian entry is excluded from the U.S. totals, giving 6,054 wineries across the 50 states.

These counts reflect our catalog, which we expand continually, rather than an official census, so treat them as a current, directional snapshot of American wine country. If you cite this page, a link back to Wino Notion is appreciated.

Frequently asked questions

How many wineries are there in the United States?

Wino Notion's catalog tracks 6,054 U.S. wineries across all 50 states. That is the number of winery tasting rooms and producers in our database, not an official federal census (the real national total, counting tiny bonded producers, is higher) - but it is a broad, current cross-section of where Americans can actually go taste wine.

Which U.S. state has the most wineries?

California, by a wide margin: 2,319 wineries in our catalog, about 38.3% of all U.S. wineries we track. Texas is a distant second (482), followed by Washington (417), Oregon (367), and New York (236).

Is wine made in all 50 states?

Yes. Every one of the 50 U.S. states has at least one winery in our catalog. Wine grapes (and fruit wines) are now produced commercially nationwide, from California and the Pacific Northwest to the Midwest, the South, New England, and even Alaska and Hawaii.

How does Wino Notion count wineries by state?

We total the wineries in our catalog by their home region and roll those regions up to states. Sub-regions are counted in their state (for example Napa, Sonoma, and Paso Robles all count as California; the Finger Lakes as New York). The bi-state Columbia Gorge is counted under Washington, and one Canadian entry is excluded from the U.S. totals.
