About Viña Castellano
Viña Castellano is a family-owned, fully estate-grown vineyard and winery in the rolling hills of Auburn, in Placer County's Sierra Foothills wine country. Named in honor of the Mendez family's Castilian roots, it grew from land the family has farmed for more than forty years; co-owner Wilkins and her late father, Gabe Mendez, planted the first Tempranillo and Syrah in 1999, inspired by his conviction that the foothills echoed the terroir of Spain's Castile region.
The winery specializes in Spanish and Mediterranean varieties - Tempranillo, Syrah, Monastrell (Mourvedre), Grenache, Verdejo and Cabernet Franc among them - made in small batches from the roughly eight to ten planted acres. Its wines have earned honors including a San Francisco Chronicle Best of Class Tempranillo and a California State Fair Best of California for the Abuelito red Spanish blend.
Visitors taste in a handcrafted stone barrel cave, lined with granite unearthed when the vineyard was planted, along with a rustic bar, bistro and a serene pond setting with picnic tiers, gazebo and seasonal Cabana Bar. The dog-friendly tasting room is generally open Thursday through Sunday from around noon to 5 pm, so it is best to confirm current hours and any reservations directly with the winery.
