About Vitae Springs Vineyard

Vitae Springs has been a family vineyard since 1978, which puts it among the earlier plantings in the southern Willamette Valley, and the detail that matters is what those vines are growing on. They are self-rooted rather than grafted onto resistant rootstock, which is rare and increasingly hard to replicate.

The VanVolkinburg family own and run it, with Earl and Joel VanVolkinburg making the wine. Farming is regenerative and the vineyard sits alongside an organic orchard. The winemaking is described as gentle and transparent, with minimal intervention and barrel ageing on the whites.

The estate range is Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner and Muller-Thurgau, with Chardonnay bottled under a second label, Amica Luna. Both are poured in the same room.

That room is a converted barn, kept rustic and open to the weather rather than sealed and climate-controlled, next to the vineyard and orchard. The tasting includes a farmer's snack plate. Weekday and holiday visits need confirming ahead, which is the usual shape of things at a farm this size.

Planted in 1978 on self-rooted vines, poured in a barn next to the orchard.
