Best Walla Walla Wineries (2026 Guide)

One of the Pacific Northwest's great red-wine regions: Cabernet, Merlot, and cult Syrah. Updated for 2026.

Walla Walla is one of the Pacific Northwest's great wine regions, a warm, welcoming valley in the southeastern corner of Washington (spilling across the border into Oregon) that has grown from a handful of pioneers into one of America's most admired red-wine destinations. Its reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but Walla Walla has become equally famous for Syrah, above all from the stony, cobbled soils of the Rocks District, which produces some of the country's most distinctive, savory Syrah. Add a charming, walkable downtown full of tasting rooms, serious restaurants, and genuine small-town hospitality, and Walla Walla is as rewarding to visit as it is to drink.

Below are the Walla Walla wineries we recommend most overall, a mix of founding pioneers, cult Syrah producers, and polished estates. Several of the most sought-after are allocation-only, so plan accordingly. Current as of October 2026.

How we chose these wineries

The wineries

Leonetti Cellar

The valley's founding winery

Bonded in 1977 by Gary Figgins, Leonetti was Walla Walla's first commercial winery, and its early Cabernet drew national acclaim that put the valley on the map. A benchmark, allocation-only producer of Bordeaux-style reds, it remains the historic cornerstone of the region.

Good to know: Allocation list; limited visits. Walla Walla.

Our tip: The wines are allocation-only, but this is where Walla Walla wine began.

How to choose

Planning your visit

Walla Walla's wineries spread from a walkable downtown (Seven Hills and many tasting rooms) out across the valley: west toward Lowden (Woodward Canyon, L'Ecole No 41), south toward the Oregon-side Rocks District (Cayuse, and many Syrah producers), and up onto the hills (Pepper Bridge, Long Shadows). Base yourself in the town of Walla Walla, which has excellent lodging and dining, and plan clusters by area. Note that the most famous names (Leonetti, Cayuse) are allocation-only with little or no public tasting, so build your day around the many estates that welcome visitors, and book ahead where needed. It is a long drive or a short flight from Seattle or Portland, so most visitors make a weekend of it.

What to avoid

Do not expect to taste the cult names on a whim; Leonetti and Cayuse are allocation-only, so plan around the many welcoming estates instead. Do not pigeonhole Walla Walla as Cabernet country alone; its Rocks District Syrah is world-class, so taste both. And do not underestimate the distances or the trip logistics, it is remote, so make a weekend of it and book lodging early.

Frequently asked questions

Which are the best wineries in Walla Walla?

A well-rounded list includes the founding Leonetti Cellar and Woodward Canyon, the historic schoolhouse L'Ecole No 41, the cult Syrah producer Cayuse, the estate Pepper Bridge, the downtown Seven Hills, the bold K Vintners, and the all-star Long Shadows. Note that Leonetti and Cayuse are largely allocation-only, so plan around the many estates that welcome visitors.

What wine is Walla Walla known for?

Bold red wine. Walla Walla's reputation was built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and it is now equally famous for Syrah, especially from the stony Rocks District on the Oregon side, which makes some of America's most distinctive, savory Syrah. The warm valley, serious winemaking culture, and walkable town make it one of the Pacific Northwest's premier red-wine destinations.

What is the Rocks District?

The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater is a small, famous sub-appellation on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla Valley, defined by its dramatic bed of basalt cobblestones. Those stones give the region's Syrah a distinctive savory, meaty, mineral character, and cult producers like Cayuse (whose French founder Christophe Baron pioneered the area) have made it one of America's most sought-after Syrah terroirs.

Is Walla Walla in Washington or Oregon?

Mostly Washington, but the Walla Walla Valley AVA straddles the state line, dipping south into Oregon, where the famous Rocks District sits near Milton-Freewater. The town of Walla Walla and most tasting rooms are in southeastern Washington, but a full visit naturally crosses into Oregon for the Rocks District Syrah producers.

How do I visit Walla Walla wine country?

Base yourself in the welcoming town of Walla Walla, which has good lodging and excellent restaurants, and plan clusters of wineries by area, downtown, west toward Lowden, the Rocks District to the south, and the hills. It is remote (a long drive or short flight from Seattle or Portland), so most people make a weekend of it. Book ahead, and remember the cult names are allocation-only.
