About Westerhold Family Vineyards
Westerhold Family Vineyards is a small, family-owned estate winery in the cool Bennett Valley AVA, southeast of Santa Rosa, dedicated to the pursuit of exceptional estate-grown Syrah. John Westerhold and Sharon Bauman moved from Los Angeles to Sonoma County in 2006 with a dream of farming their own vineyard and handcrafting wine from their grapes; they found the perfect Bennett Valley property, expanded the plantings in 2008, and enlisted a fortuitous neighbor, then up-and-coming winemaker Russell Bevan, who has crafted their wines since the inaugural 2007 vintage.
Bennett Valley's well-drained mountain-benchland soils, early-morning fog and cool afternoon marine breezes create ideal conditions for cool-climate Syrah, and the results have been remarkable: back-to-back wins at the prestigious Hospice du Rhone Syrah Shoot-Out, plus Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the estate. Every bottle comes exclusively from the family's home vineyard.
Production is small and offered largely through the mailing list, so tastings are personal and by appointment.
